The British Independent Retailers Association has said it will be standing in solidarity with the Scottish Grocers' Federation (SGF) as it addresses critical concerns faced by the retail sector in Scotland.

Bira says it fully supports the letter recently sent to Shona Robinson, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Finance, urging the Scottish Government to take immediate action to safeguard the future of independent retailers across the nation.

In the letter, the SGF highlights the challenges posed by rising business rates, increasing costs, and evolving consumer behaviours that have significantly impacted independent retailers. These issues have been further exacerbated by the economic uncertainties arising from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Pete Cheema, Chief Executive of the Scottish Grocers' Federation highlights in his letter: "We believe that it is essential that the Scottish Government offer comparable rates relief to retail and hospitality to that available in England and Wales.

"We firmly believe that the Scottish Government should act now and provide, at the very least, similar assistance in Scotland while at the same time ensuring that current supports and reliefs available are not impacted, or other business-related rates increased."

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, responded to the letter and said: "We fully support the Scottish Grocers' Federation's efforts to raise awareness of the pressing issues faced by independent retailers in Scotland. The survival and prosperity of these businesses are vital not only to the economy but also to the local communities they serve.

"Bira recognises the immense contribution of independent retailers to Scotland's retail landscape, offering unique products, personalised service, and a distinct shopping experience. However, these businesses are operating under immense pressure, struggling to navigate the economic challenges while maintaining their competitive edge.

"It is crucial for the Scottish Government to listen and respond to the concerns raised in this letter. We urge Deputy First Minister Shona Robinson to prioritise the needs of independent retailers and take decisive action to address the burdensome business rates and other financial challenges that threaten their sustainability."

Bira is committed to supporting independent retailers across the United Kingdom and advocating for their best interests. The association believes that a thriving independent retail sector not only fosters economic growth but also strengthens the social fabric of local communities.
